Designing your pipeline stages

Updated Mar 19, 20262 min readNudge Team#pipelines#deals

Your pipeline is a sequence of stages that deals move through. Each stage belongs to one of three groups: Open, Won, or Lost. Nudge uses these groups for reporting (e.g. "Won this month") and to know when a deal is still in play.

Start with the defaults

When you create a pipeline, you get three stages: New (Open), Won (Won), Lost (Lost). That is enough to run a simple sales process. Move deals to Won or Lost when they close.

Add stages when you need clarity, not complexity

Go to Pipelines, open your pipeline, and click Edit. You will see the list of stages. Click Add Stage, give it a name (e.g. "Proposal sent", "Negotiation"), and pick a group:

  • Open: the deal is still active. These stages show on your pipeline board and count toward "open deals."
  • Won: the deal closed successfully. Counts in "won" reporting.
  • Lost: the deal closed without winning. Counts in "lost" reporting.

You can reorder stages by dragging them. Keep the list short: 4 to 7 open stages is usually enough. More stages do not make the pipeline better, they make it noisier.

Keep it simple

  • You can rename or add stages at any time. Start with New, Won, and Lost and add only when you find yourself saying "I wish I could see which deals are in X."
  • One pipeline can serve the whole team on Base. On Premium you can add more pipelines (e.g. by product or region) or use private pipelines for personal tracking.
